Plymouth Marjon 2v3 St Blazey Att 32 (19 Away)

Player manager Stuart Morgan was suspended after picking up 5 yellow cards during the season while Ryan Howe was unavailable. Josh Harris and Oli Deadman were still out with hamstring injuries. Dan Perryman was still unavailable after a recent illness. Joe Stone returned in defence while Mat Hayden returned to the starting eleven, up front with Seb Broomfield.

This was St Blazey’s first ever visit to ‘The Campus’ of Plymouth University to play on the 4G astro turf under floodlights.

The match kicked of in murky conditions and St Blazey took just 8 minutes to take the lead. Broomfield making only his second start of the season picked up the ball in midfield, held up the ball while Vooght made the overlap on the right and Broomfields perfect defence splitting through ball left Vooght in on goal who drilled the ball low and hard which the Marjon goalkeeper could only help into the goal. St Blazey could have gone 2 up when after a good passing move Johnson fired over the bar. Broomfield then had two half chances to score. The first from a goal kick which was headed on only for his half volley to go wide and then after a good cross from Bennett a flicked header that went wide. Marjon out of no where grabbed an equaliser when a half volley from Parsonage from distance flew past Chapman into the far corner giving him no chance. Marjon, encouraged by their equaliser took the game to St Blazey and almost took the lead after a poor pass from Yeoman was intercepted, and after a good run and shot, Chapman had to save well. Another low shot inside the box was saved moments later. St Blazey broke away and Johnson through on goal was thwarted by the quick thinking Marjon goal keeper who raced off his line. Vooght was booked for complaining about a challenge and was lucky not to see red moments later when he bundled over a Marjon player but the referee just had a word with him. Chapman made another good save from a snap shot just before the break, putting the ball behind for a corner. The corner came in and came off a Marjon knee and went wide. There was just time for Harry Eaton to pick up another yellow for a late tackle as St Blazey were glad to see the half time whistle.

Half Time. Plymouth Marjon 1v1 St Blazey.

St Blazey started the second half as they did the first on the front foot, no doubt driven from Stuart Morgans half time team talk. Matt Hayden made a chance for himself when he chested the ball down, turned and volleyed the ball which needed a good save to keep the scores level. Hayden was making chances and it was his run down the left where he took on the defender and his first time cross was met by Eaton running in which was enough to squeeze the ball over the line and put St Blazey 1v2 up. St Blazey pushed forward for a third and Broomfield played in Rendle who’s first time shot was saved. Another run from Hayden and a low cross into the box found Broomfield who touched ball back to Yeoman who’s shot was blocked. In a rare attack from Marjon, Chapman made a good save from a long range effort. The Marjon keeper was soon making another good save. From a Johnson corner, Lee Whetters header had to be tipped over. With 20 minutes to go, Paddy West came on for Yeoman. Hayden had a header saved and Johnson a shot saved after as good one two with Broomfield. With 10 minutes left Marjons were awarded a free kick just outside the box but the wall did it’s job and the loose ball was hacked to safety. Only minutes later another late challenge and another free kick to Marjons. The free kick was driven towards goal and it took a great save from Chapman but the loose ball was only cleared to the 6 yard box and the Marjon player placed the ball in the bottom left hand corner to spark celebrations and a possible point gained in the 86th minute. It looked like a frustrating draw for St Blazey but they were not finished. Rendle who had been a constant threat going forward picked up the ball, drove forward and took a dipping shot from distance that the goal keeper got right behind but in the dim light the ball squirmed under his body and St Blazey had snatched all 3 points and the players and the bench celebrated as one knowing this could be a huge 3 points come the end of the season.
