St Blazey 6v1 Saltram. Att, 39 Away 0
St Blazey, playing their last pre season friendly of the summer had ten players missing but still had a squad of 15 for the visit of Saltram. This was a good opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim for a starting place for next weeks opening fixture against Callington Town.
St Blazey playing towards the Laundry end in the first half, were quick out the blocks, taking the game to Saltram from the start. An early chance for St Blazey seen the first effort on goal fly high over the bar and out the ground. After just 9 minutes, St Blazey took the lead. Hogan was played in down the left and his shot beat the Saltram goalkeeper with a low shot that crept in at the far post. Phillips had a shot well saved before St Blazey doubled their lead. Elliot Rendle got to the bye line and cut the ball back for Maybin who finished clinically, smashing the ball across goal into the net with just 20 minutes played. St Blazey look dangerous with every attack and Matty Edwards should have done better when a lovely ball down the left to him, left him through on goal only for his cross come shot to go well over the bar. A good move on the right left the Saltram defence stretched and Hogan in space hit his effort over the bar. St Blazey were awarded a penalty when Mabin running in the box was adjudged to have been pulled down. Up stepped Hogan who smashed the ball home to make it 3v0.
Hogan then completed his hat trick. A ball into the box found Mabin who’s shot was well saved by May in the Saltram goal only for Hogan to smash home the rebound. Powell almost almost made it five when Rendle cut the ball back but Powell’s shot was well saved. St Blazey were not to be denied a 5th before half time though, Willmott putting in a cross for Edwards to head home.
Half time, St Blazey 5v0 Saltram
Saltrum came out for the second half and pulled a goal back within a minute of the re start to give them some encouragement after a long first half for their players. St Blazey were soon pushing forward and Elliot Rendle had the ball in the back of the net only for the linesman to rule it out for off side. A poor clearance was almost punished when Edwards picked up the loose ball and played it to Eke who’s shot smashed against the bar. The impressive Rendle was denied again when he was played in but May smothered his shot from close range. Hogan missed a volleyed chance from two yards out at the far post and Edwards shot over the bar when clean through. The chances were coming but not being taken. Willmot was next, after good control with his first touch he volleyed the ball wide. Finally the 6th goal came. Steve Edwards on as a half time substitute who caused Saltram all sorts of problems on the right in the second half put in a lovely low cross which Maybin turned home squeezing the ball inside the near post. A good performance to finish St Blazey’s pre season schedule and now all their focus turns to next Saturday’s season opener against Callington Town.
