St Blazey 2v5 Mousehole Att. 63 (16 away)
St Blazey and Mousehole came into this rearranged fixture with both clubs locked together on 43 points but with St Blazey having a game in hand. Lewis Coombes and Seb Broomfield started up front with player manager Morgan in midfield along side Paddy West, Harry Eaton and Lyle Johnson. The back four of Lewis Vooght, Lee Whetters, Joe Stone and Elliot Rendle looked a stern test for Mousehole with Toby Chapman in goal. Yeoman, Deadman and Harris were on the bench. Howe was unavailable.
The big news going into the match was the surprise sacking of the Mousehole manager Kevin Richards after their league defeat to Ludgvan. Having turned their league campaign around and reached the Cornwall senior cup final along with the semi finals of both the league cup and charity cup, how would the Mousehole team respond with 1st team player/assistant manager Calum Elliot in charge until the end of the season.
St Blazey kicked off playing towards the Laundry end with a strong wind behind them. Mousehole made the first half chance when a shot was going wide only for the ball to flick a Mousehole head and fly just past the post. With just 6 minutes on the clock, Lewis Coombes battled for the ball some 50 yards from goal and spotted the Mousehole goalkeeper off his line and hit a shot that dipped right over the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net to put St Blazey in front and in with a chance of the goal of the season. A superb strike that left the goal keeper no chance. Joe Stone had to be at his best with a good headered clearance and then a perfectly timed block to keep Mousehole out. St Blazey went up the other end and Harry Eaton picked a loose ball 20 yards from goal but dragged his shot wide of goal. On 21 minutes St Blazey were delt a huge blow when Rendle was shown a straight red card for a high foot challenge on the half way line. It looked as if the referee was going to show a yellow but after several complaints from Mousehole the red card was shown and St Blazey had it all to do. Broomfield was sacrificed straight away for Harris to fill in the left back spot. Mousehole made a change after a nasty looking injury just before St Blazey doubled their lead just after the half hour. Morgan ran on to a good through ball and as the goal keeper came out he delicately chipped the ball over him and into the left hand corner for his 10th league goal of the season. St Blazey were in control while Mousehole continued to knock the ball around well. With five minutes to go before half time Mousehole were awarded a very soft free kick out on the right. The ball in was cleared for a corner. The corner was cleared to the edge of the box but Will Vouama took a touch and hit a shot which dipped and swerved and beat Chapman in goal to pull one back.
Half time. St Blazey 2v1 Mousehole
After conceding so late in the first half and Mousehole having the wind behind them in the second half St Blazey knew this would be a long 45 minutes. Mousehole came out and kept the ball well and within five minutes they were level. A great cross was headered back across goal and Jake Andrew headered home from close range. Chapman in the St Blazey goal was soon relieved to see a Mousehole effort on goal deflect over for a corner as the pressure began to tell. St Blazey were struggling to keep hold of the ball as Mousehole passed the ball from side to side without really threatning but with 19 minutes to go they found the break through. Another brilliant cross from the left was headered into the bottom right corner by Jake Andrews giving Chapman no chance in goal. Mousehole took the sting out the game with St Blazey reduced to long balls to just relieve the pressure. With time running out a Mousehole corner was swung in to the far post where Steven Ziboth bundled the ball in at the far post and minutes later another fantastic left footed cross found Jake Andrews unmarked and he stooped to head in Mousehole’s 5th and complete his hat trick.
Full time. St Blazey 2v5 Mousehole
Man of the match, Harry Eaton. Another impressive performance in midfield giving everything until he had to go off near the end with cramp. Never gave up.
Next up for St Blazey is a trip to Holsworthy on Saturday with a 3.00pm kick off. St Blazey lost 2v3 at home to Holsworthy earlier in the season and will be looking to make sure there is no repeat of that result.
