Penzance 6v2 St Blazey. Att 110 (10 away)
St Blazey made the trip to Penzance for the second time this season to play their first league match since Boxing day. Having gone out the league cup at Penzance earlier in the season 2v1, St Blazey would have wanted a better result but with several key players missing for this rearranged mid week trip it was always going to be difficult. Toby Chapman returned in goal after missing the cup win over Polperro but Rendle, Whetters, Bennett, Deadman Eaton were all missing along with new signing Coombes as work commitments and injury’s left manager Morgan with a selection headache.
Penzance started the brighter under the Penlee floodlights on a cold crisp evening and should have took the lead when a cross from the right was met with a free header which bounced over the bar. Chapman in the St Blazey goal was soon in action when another looping header needed plucking out the air. Player manager Stuart Morgan had St Blazey’s first effort on goal after Broomfield played the ball into him and he turned the defender but his shot flew over the Penzance cross bar. Penzance were soon back on the attack and broke with pace down the right with the ball across the edge of the box being cleared into a tree for a corner. The corner was swung in at pace and the former St Blazey player Mark Vercesi was left unmarked to head home after just 15 minutes. St Blazey only needed 3 minutes to find an equaliser how ever. Howie picked up the ball in midfield and chipped the ball over the defenders and the Penzance goal keeper came rushing out and Morgan chipped in to make it 1v1. The Penzance number 10 went on a run down the right before cutting inside and shooting low but to easy for Chapman to collect. St Blazey turned the game around on the half hour when a free kick from Morgan was met by Broomfield who’s header looped over the goal keeper to make it 1v2. St Blazey looked the more likely to score again until the referee awarded a free kick when a cross was handled by Yeoman. The decision looked harsh with the ball hitting him from close range. The free kick was taken and only partially cleared and the loose ball was drilled home to make it 2v2.
Half time, Penzance 2v2 St Blazey
Penzance came out in a positive frame of mind after that late equaliser in the first half and almost immediately took the lead. Another good move down the right and cross but the header went wide. St Blazey looked off the pace and Penzance missed another great chance when they worked the ball into the box and went around the goalkeeper but Stone was well placed on the line to clear the final effort. Chapman made another good save with his feet after a low shot was drilled from the right of the box before Penzance took the lead on 56 minutes. More good work out on the right getting past two defenders and the low ball across the box was swept home at the far post. Penzance continued to dominate but St Blazey could have equalised when a throw in was quickly taken to Morgan who’s low cross found Broomfield who sliced his effort wide. Good work from Morgan earned a corner which he took. Broomfield running in at the near post could only head wide. Penzance wrapped up the points in the 83rd minutes when Ed Wilton slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner. St Blazey pushed men forward and earned a free kick which Morgan took but the shot was at a comfortable height for the Penzance goal keeper who pushed it away for a corner. The corner was swung in but Howey running in at the far post couldn’t bundle it home. Penzance broke away and added a 5th in the 87th minute through Ed Wilton and then rubbed salt in the wound when a quick throw in was taken and the ball smashed home to make it 6v2 and Ed Wilton had bagged a late hat trick.
