Holsworthy 1v2 St Blazey Att 68 (11 away )
Ollie Deadman returned to the starting line up at right back while Elliot Rendle went to left back after his sending off against Mousehole. Paddy West started on the bench along with player manager Stuart Morgan. Ollie kennedy was still injured while Ryan Howe and Lyle Johnson were unavailable.
After recent months of heavy rain, St Blazey made the trip to Holsworthy in glorious weather with temperatures in the mid 20’s. St Blazey were looking to put right the home defeat to Holsworthy when they went 0v3 up at Blaise Park before St Blazey pulled back two goals but couldn’t find a third to rescue a point.
Early on St Blazey goal keeper Chapman had to be alert to block a loose ball when it looked like Holsworthy might have a chance to score but Chapman was quickest to the ball and the danger was cleared. Within 8 minutes St Blazey were ahead. Harris swung in a corner and Joe Stone bundled the ball home at the far post for his 6th league goal of the season. That early goal settled any nerves and Eaton won a loose ball, played it out wide to Deadman who played a long ball into Coombes who flicked the ball on and a Holsworthy defender almost headered the ball into the far corner but for the good reactions of the Holsworthy goal keeper who pushed the ball away to safety. St Blazey almost gifted Holsworthy an equaliser when a hopeful ball into the box was headered by Stone straight into the back of Whetters and the ball fell kindly only for the Holsworthy striker to drive the ball across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. Lewis Vooght had a good effort on goal only to see it rise and go over the bar. Rendle was booked for a high footed challenge. Just before half time, Broomfield got on the end of a long ball but his effort went over the bar.
Half time. Holsworthy 0v1 St Blazey
St Blazey had the first chance in the second half when a ball over the top saw the Holsworthy goal keeper come racing out and slicing his clearance straight to Coombes who could only put the ball wide of the far post. Holsworthy almost made St Blazey pay when a defensive mix up left the Holsworthy forward in on goal but his shot was well blocked to save a certain equaliser. Harris put in a cross to the far post that was met by Broomfield who’s looping header went wide of the far post. Harris who was always a threat on the left put in another fantastic cross and assistant player manager Yeoman came sliding in at far post and blazed over form 3 yards leaving him still looking for his first goal of the season. Holsworthy still carried a threat and a shot from the left went wide of the near post. With half an hour still to go, Morgan brought himself on along with West with Vooght and Yeoman making way. A throw in to Morgan gave him the chance to turn the defender and his shot was well blocked. St Blazey continued to look the most likely and Harris chased a lost cause down the left and beat the defender to put in a cross that Coombes controlled, turned and fired into the roof of the net to put St Blazey 0v2 up. Coombes went for a spectacular second when the ball came to him 30 yards from goal but his effort couldn’t beat the Holsworthy goal keeper. Morgan then had a chance to make it 3 when he was played through but a great block from the goalkeeper kept the score at 2. Morgan then went down the right and cut the ball back to Harris who sliced the ball well wide and the ball went out for a throw in. Deadman then made a run down the right, cutting the ball back to Broomfield who’s first time effort shot was deflected and cleared. After all St Blazey’s chances to score a third it was Holsworthy who were to make it a awkward last few minutes. A poor pass went out of play on the left and Holsworthy took it quickly and Chandler chipped the ball over Chapman in goal with 6 minutes left to play. With a couple minutes to go and Paddy West struggling with a knock, physio Jackson came on for the final couple minutes. The highlight being a step over to confuse everyone as St Blazey held on to secure all 3 points.
Full time. Holsworthy 1v2 St Blazey
Man of the match, Ollie Deadman. Good defensive display and kept the ball well. Looked to make things happen down the right going forward.
Next up for St Blazey is Tuesday night’s trip to Elburton Villa with a 7.30ko followed by a trip to Wendron next Saturday with a 3.00ko.
